Helping Older South Dakota Voters Make Better Choices

October 22, 2010

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A new study shows the numbers of older voters continue to grow. Leo Estrada, a national board member of AARP, in South Dakota this week, says that trend is accelerating.

"The fact is that the 45-plus will be voting at double the rates of people under 45. It's a trend that's been going on for a while, but now it's pretty clear that older voters will have a great deal to say in the results of the November election."

Estrada says AARP is non-partisan but politically active, asking members their views, then taking those results to the candidates.

"We are effective by looking at the issues we believe are important to our members - not only to them, but also to their families and their communities. We focus on things such as economic issues, health issues and consumer issues."

Estrada says surveys show their members are concerned about social security, Medicare, health care and consumer fraud.
