ALBANY, N.Y. - Gov. Paterson is expected to appoint a new commissioner for the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) this week, replacing Pete Grannis, who was fired. It's becoming a political issue this election as more than 20 environmental groups are asking candidates Cuomo and Paladino to speak up regarding the state's environmental agencies.

Rob Moore with Environmental Advocates of New York says the state lost a proven steward of the environment in Grannis.

"The loss of Pete Grannis really highlights the dire state of not only that agency, but also of all of the state's environmental agencies, and environmental protection efforts more in general."

Moore says the groups would like to know how the candidates plan to treat the state's Environmental Protection Fund, which was slashed by 40 percent last year. Audubon New York, The American Lung Association, and the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter are among the groups seeking such answers. According to published reports, Patterson will name Peter Iwanowicz as the DEC's acting commissioner

Under the Paterson administration, the DEC lost 849 scientists, engineers and enforcement agents, and Moore says the department wasn't the only agency involved with the environment hit with deep cuts.

"Similarly, the Office of Parks has lost about 20 percent of its permanent staff as well as a thousand seasonal staff, which were essential to the functioning of state parks, and state forests and lands."
