Thursday, November 4, 2010

CONCORD, N.H. - Suicide prevention is the topic of the largest gathering on the issue in New Hampshire, which will take place Friday. The conference will bring together a mix of health care providers, law enforcement personnel, first responders, survivors and educators.

Dr. Phil Rodgers, a nationally recognized evaluation scientist with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will speak at the conference. He says although Americans have a long way to go in terms of suicide prevention, many strides have been made in recent years.

"I think our strengths are building, primarily in the area of awareness. Suicide was quite often not something that was discussed publicly; I think it's much more up-front at this point."

Youth suicides have made headlines this year in connection with bullying, but Dr. Rodgers says the risk factors are not always that clear, and not all bullying results in a young person taking their life. He makes the case for collaboration to save lives.

"Training caregivers, teachers, school administrators and counselors to be better able to identify those youth who exhibit signs of suicide risk, and then to refer them for treatment - these are important interventions in regard to reducing suicide risk in school settings and for young people."

The theme for the 7th annual conference is "Strategies for Safety and Resilience." It will be held at Loon Mountain, Lincoln, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., coordinated by the Youth Suicide Prevention Assembly, Suicide Prevention Council and NAMI-NH.
