SALEM, Ore. - Oregonians may have had to wait a little longer than usual for final vote tallies, but now that the races have been called, one group that watches over issues related to health care, public safety, education and the economy is not waiting. CAUSA is already starting to prepare for the state legislative session.

CAUSA Executive Director Francisco Lopez sees positive possibilities for the organization's list of goals now that John Kitzhaber has won the governorship.

"He has a big, big heart for issues related to health care, especially health care services for uninsured children. He has been an advocate for health care for all."

Lopez says clinics need sustained funding to deliver that care and serve uninsured families.

One of CAUSA's biggest projects is restoring access to an Oregon driver's license for people without immigration documentation. A bill has already been drafted to allow them to apply. Lopez calls it a public safety issue, as well as an economic one.

"It will create more revenue for our state; car insurance companies will sell more insurance; and employers, they need the labor and they need their workers to drive."

Another issue CAUSA supports is in-state tuition for students who have graduated from high school or received their G.E.D. in Oregon, regardless of their immigration status. The group also will be working for better housing conditions for farm workers, especially in central and eastern Oregon.
