The Most Important Holiday Gift may be the Gift of Reading

CHICAGO - When it comes to choosing holiday gifts for children, some parents and grandparents may go for the glitz and the gadgets, but Gaylord Gieseke, vice president of Voices for Illinois Children, recommends choosing a really good book for that child in your life.

"That's because our goal is that by the end of third grade they are no longer learning to read but they are what we say "reading to learn.""

Gieseke says research shows that children who have mastered reading by the end of third grade are more likely to graduate and succeed in life.

She says that many parents already understand the importance of early childhood education but some people don't realize how important it is to make a habit of reading with your children on a regular basis, even when they are six, seven and eight years old.

"It really is a skill that you need to have by the end of third grade. And if you don't have it, what the research tells us, is you're going to fall farther and farther behind."

Besides, Gieske says, reading with your children can be a great way to unwind, for everyone in the family.

"It's that 'pause' moment. Even if you sit down with them for fifteen minutes and they're on your lap and they have your attention, that is full of good stuff."

Gieske says that, even though there are many educational toys out there, her family spends a lot of time during the holidays searching for the right book to give as a gift.

"A lot of people aren't going to think it's the sexiest gift on their list. It's the most important gift on their list."
