Ohio Rewarded for Covering Uninsured Children

COLUMBUS, Ohio - It's more than just a big pat on the back... Ohio will receive more than $12 million as a federal Medicaid performance bonus award to continue its work on cutting the red tape for coverage of uninsured children.

The number of previously-uninsured children now enrolled in Medicaid is up nine percent this year in Ohio. And the director of the Center for Medicaid and State Operations, Cindy Mann, says that's because the state has worked hard to reduce paperwork and administrative hurdles.

"The local leaders have really taken the initiative in moving Ohio forward as a leader among states in terms of its dedication to assuring that all children in the state have access to good health care."

Ohio has implemented measures such as telephone renewals, presumptive eligibility, and 12 months' continuous coverage, which have helped to enroll more than 92,000 children.

With the award money, states must enroll more currently-eligible children. The executive director of Voices for Ohio's Children, Amy Swanson, says investing some of these one-time funds provides an opportunity to build on Ohio's progress in streamlining eligibility and renewals.

"We are hoping some of it is invested in supporting technology and the local infrastructure needed to really cut the red tape, to continuously work at improving our system, and get out the delays."

Swanson adds that those investments pay dividends in the long run by keeping children healthy and saving taxpayers money.

A total of 15 states received the performance bonus awards.
