Flu-like Cases Spiking in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. - Flu season has been hitting North Carolina hard, right during the holiday season. More then five percent of emergency room visits in the last week were flu-related, double the number of such visits in the fall. While anyone can contract the influenza virus, doctors say children are especially susceptible.

Pediatrician Dr. Paul Lively says most people recover in a few weeks, but the flu can lead to complications.

He describes what parents tell him when their children get the flu.

"Typically, what parents will say is, 'Johnny was fine,' and then it's like, they say, 'All of a sudden he was coughing, he had a runny nose, his fever spiked 103, and he just felt like he was going to die.' And that's what influenza feels like."

Dr. Lively says severe complications from the flu are most common in children younger than age two, or those with chronic health problems.

The doctor says that to stop the spread of germs, remember to clean toys and surfaces that children touch and practice basic hygiene.

"Hand sanitizing, washing hands: top priority. Sneezing into your arm, rather than onto your hand; keeping fingers out of your nose and your mouth."

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends annual flu shots for everyone over the age of six months.

This year's vaccine protects against two influenza strains and H1N1. All strains of the flu can bring about serious complications. So far, there have been no flu-related deaths in the Tarheel State.
