HARTFORD, Conn. - When Connecticut legislators convene this week, they'll be greeted by an exhibit from the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance, featuring a Nobel Prize-winning economist, among others. The Concourse exhibit also includes commentary from parents, teachers, business leaders and a retired general, all promoting the importance of early education for kids from birth to age eight.

Among the contributors is State Senator Beth Bye, who has 30 years' experience in early childhood education. She says the people working on the issue come from a large variety of local, state and federal agencies and organizations.

"Our most important priority in early childhood should be trying to bring those diverse agencies together and have them work together or even form an early childhood department."

Bye adds that it's not a partisan subject.

"This isn't a Democrat or Republican issue. This is an investment in our state that's really important. In Connecticut we've always had bipartisan support for early childhood initiatives, and I expect it will be the same this year."

She adds that incoming Governor Dan Malloy made expansion of early childhood programs a priority as mayor of Stamford.

"I cannot imagine he won't look to do something similar here, and take these disparate pieces and make sense of it and work with the cities and towns and state agencies to support early childhood ed in a way that makes a lot more sense than we're doing it now."

Bye and others say quality early care and education are essential to producing a competent workforce.
