New Oil Pipeline Could Boost OH Gas Prices

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Conservationists say Ohio drivers could pay a lot more at the pump if the U.S. State Department approves plans to build a new oil pipeline. According to a report from TransCanada, the oil company's nearly 1,700-mile proposed Keystone XL crude oil pipeline would bypass the Midwest, delivering more than 500,000 barrels of Canadian oil daily to port refineries in Texas.

Ryan Salmon, energy policy advisor with the National Wildlife Federation, says oil supplies to Midwest refineries would decline, resulting in much higher prices.

"Fifteen of America's heartland states, including Ohio, would be the hardest hit, with an increase of about $6.55 per barrel. That translates, pretty much, to a $.15 increase per gallon of gas."

Salmon esimates that America's economy could take a nearly $4 billion annual hit.

TransCanada has said the pipeline would significantly reduce America's dependence on oil from other nations. Opponents argue that moving oil from the Midwest to a leading export center in Texas would do the opposite and funnel the supply abroad.

According to Salmon, the pipeline is a step in the wrong direction for America's energy policy. He adds it would help keep the country dependent on one of the world's dirtiest fuels for the next 50 years.

"Alternatively, we should be making investments in technologies that will help us transition to a clean energy economy as opposed to going toward an increased dependence on dirty fuel sources like Canadian tar sands."

Salmon says tar sands produce a heavier crude that emits more pollution than conventional oil.
