Project Pushes Adult Support ”Web” for AZ Students

PHOENIX - It takes at least five caring adults to support successful kids in school. That's a key concept in a yearlong, statewide initiative by the Arizona School Boards Association to increase community responsibility for student achievement.

Consultant Derek Peterson says research has shown an adult "web of support" in a child's life translates into higher grades and better behavior.

"We can almost essentially guarantee, truly, that kids will thrive, do well in school; that they will be decent human beings, and that they will avoid those risk behaviors: drugs, alcohol, riding in a car with a drinking driver, et cetera."

Mindful of the economy and likely additional cuts in education funding, Peterson says the community-support approach for students costs very little – and what kids really need from adults, is time.

"What we Americans do oftentimes is think that if we give money, we can spare the time. If I give somebody a $100 donation, maybe I don't have to go attend that meeting and work with those kids, because I'm paying somebody else to do what I could have done with my hundred dollars. We need to turn back toward our children."

Peterson says the statewide community engagement project is aimed at driving more people to think about connecting with more kids, across Arizona.

"And it's so important to any mom, dad, grandpa, grandma, uncle, aunt, teacher, faith community leader to say, 'Hey, that kid doesn't have that web of support that they need to succeed. And if they don't, what am I going to do about it?'"

Peterson says the meetings – to be held in every Arizona county over the next 12 months with community leaders and the public – will culminate in a book, "Helping Kids Succeed - Arizona Style." It will give parents a simple checklist to help them guide their students toward success, in school and in life, he says.

This week, they will be held on Tues., Feb. 1 at Carl Hayden High School, 3333 W. Roosevelt St., Phoenix; and on Thurs., Feb. 3 at Buckeye Union High School, 1000 E. Narramore Ave., Buckeye. More information about the project is online at www.HelpingKidsSucceedArizonaStyle.org.
