Free Tax Filing Assistance for Many Granite Staters

February 7, 2011

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Tax season has begun and whether you use an accountant or a computer program, or try to file your returns on your own, it can be an expensive and complicated process. But thanks to the AARP Foundation, people in New Hampshire with low or moderate incomes do not have to go it alone and can get help for free.

Harvey Epstein is the state volunteer coordinator for the AARP Tax Aide program. He says there are several sites around the state staffed with volunteer counselors to help people file returns.

"Basically, just about any wage earner can come in, or any retired person can come in, unless they have a complicated tax situation that involves depreciation, amortization or complex stock or property trades."

Epstein says many of the tax help sites have evening and weekend hours to accommodate different schedules and you can call for an appointment or stop in. Be sure to bring as much of your information as possible.

"If they have it, bring last year's tax return. They should bring their Social Security cards for them and for all of the dependents that will be on their return. Bring all of the tax-related statements they get; all of their W-2s, all of their 1099s."

Epstein says all the volunteer Tax Aide counselors must pass IRS certification exams, and are kept up to date with changing tax laws every year.

Many returns are filed electronically and most taxpayers will receive their refunds within a week or two.
