Next Phase in Health Reform: Power to the Patient

Friday, February 11, 2011

BOSTON - It's time to put the power into the hands of the patient and begin the next phase of health care reform. That's the theme of a roundtable discussion today, which includes several medical health care policy experts from the region.

Amy Whitcomb Slemmer, executive director of Health Care for All, is hosting the event. She says that patients today are bombarded with advertisements about medications and expensive and invasive treatments, and those promotional pitches can be confusing.

"What we really need is time with our doctors to sit down and talk to us and discuss what our treatment options are. Right now, they don't have time, and they're not paid to spend that kind of time with us."

Slemmer says several pilot projects around the state focus on patient involvement. So far, she says, the results have been positive.

"Patients who are engaged in their treatment, and who make decisions and feel as though they are full partners in their health care, have better outcomes and live longer, healthier lives."

Mary Neagle manages the Care Management Program, a project at Mass General Hospital that focuses on Medicare patients with complex health issues. She says it is important for patients to have a "home base" when it comes to health care.

"For instance, a patient may get a new prescription, but may have 10 other medications they're taking. Trying to juggle all those medications, and the timing of them, can be really challenging."

Within a medical home model, the supports are there for patients, Neagle says. The primary care physician and other services are under one roof, which streamlines and simplifies the process for all concerned.

The forum, "Patient Empowerment: More Than a Slogan," is being held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Suffolk University Law School, 120 Tremont Street, Boston.
