MADISON, Wis. - As a new week starts, the so-called Wisconsin 14 say they are no closer to coming home, as more large protests ringed the Capitol for the third week in a row. The 14 Democratic state senators are still in Illinois and they say they will remain there until the Republicans agree to negotiate the budget-repair bill currently under consideration. The Senate can't vote on the measure without the Democrats because they lack a quorum.

State Senator Jon Erpenbach says there were talks at the end of last week, but they fell apart.

"We thought we were getting somewhere in the negotiations, and then the Senate Republicans passed a resolution to have us arrested, which was kind of a step back."

Last week Senate Republicans voted to have the missing senators arrested, but some legal experts question the move, saying no laws have been broken. Governor Scott Walker is proposing to trim billions of dollars from the budget, end most collective bargaining for public employees, and start firing state workers if the Democrats don't return.

Erpenbach says that, despite the arrest threats, the 14 Democrats are ready to resolve the stalemate.

"We continue to reach out and they hand us back a set of handcuffs, which is pretty interesting, but we are trying to keep the lines of communication open every day, all the time."

At a State Capitol rally over the weekend, filmmaker Michael Moore praised the Wisconsin 14 for their defense of working families in Wisconsin.

"How impressive it is for the rest of the country to see these 14 senators still, still, still refusing to participate in the scam of the century."

The billionaire Koch brothers-supported group, Americans for Prosperity, held a counter-rally Sunday supporting the governor's plans.
