Careful What You Throw Out While Doing the 'Spring Fling'
Friday, March 11, 2011
DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowans starting their spring-cleaning rituals are being reminded that some chemicals and other items don't belong in the trash.
Half-filled bottles of everything from cleaners to paint often lurk in garages, basements and under sinks. Amy Hock, Metro Waste Authority public relations specialist, advises people to read the labels and then dispose of the items appropriately - which usually means taking them to a Regional Collection Center or local collection event.
When buying replacement items, she says, look for non-toxic options and think about quantity.
"When you're buying products, we encourage people to buy only what you'll need and/or what you'll use in one year."
If you have leftover items or need something for a home project, Hock says, consider swapping with neighbors.
"Instead of going and buying something for your project, check with your neighbor and see if they have something you can use. It takes it off their hands so they don't have to dispose of it, and you're not having to buy brand-new products."
Throwing hazardous materials into the trash is dangerous, Hock says, because chemicals can mix, causing unwanted circumstances for the garbage-disposal driver and in the landfill.
