Hundreds Rally as One in PA

PITTSBURGH - Hundreds of voices carried the message of one during a Monday rally in Pittsburgh. Workers, students and activists turned out to protest the state's lack of a natural gas extraction tax, and the continuation of corporate tax loopholes. They say it's a combination that has cost Pennsylvania nearly a billion dollars in lost revenue.

Pamela Johnston is a member of the labor union SEIU 32 BJ, as a janitor at the University of Pittsburgh for 19 years. She says that, when gas extractors and other big companies are given huge tax breaks, it's the little guy who foots the bill.

"Whether it be the education cuts for our children, or pay freezes at work or . . . I mean, health insurance is going up, gas prices are going up. It's time we fight back."

Johnston believes there is strength in numbers, especially when the message is common to all.

"We're all different unions, yeah; but we need to stand up for working people because a lot of people can't stand up for themselves, the low income people that don't have a union, don't have representation."

Another protester, Steven Taylor, also a member of SEIU 32 BJ, says the issues being called into question affect all Pennsylvanians, young and old alike.

"This does affect me as a public worker, but it also affects the community . Mainly, the biggest impact is going to be on the children. That's why I'm involved."

Pennsylvania is the only state producing as much natural gas as it does, that doesn't have an extraction tax, and Governor Tom Corbett has spoken out in favor of continuing tax-free drilling. At the same time, the state is running a budget deficit of about $4 billion, and Corbett's proposed budget includes over $1 billion in cuts to public education.

The 'We Are One' rally was scheduled on the anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., with a reminder that when King was killed in 1968 he was campaigning for the right of municipal workers to unionize.
