CA’s Drought’s Over, But Not the Water Crisis, Experts Warn

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California's latest drought may be over, but experts warn the state's water crisis remains. Sunne Wright McPeak, president of the Delta Vision Foundation, says because of the unpredictability of the state's water supply and the crisis of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta ecosystem, the state must work to find permanent solutions before the next drought.

"We're not sure exactly when it will happen, but we know from history that it will, and we need to be prepared. We have this blessing from Mother Nature this year - a lot of rain, a lot of snowpack - but ironically we don't have the facilities to capture that."

The Delta Vision Strategic Plan includes restoring the eco-system in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta so fish will return, constructing facilities to capture surplus water, and continued conservation.

McPeak says the end of the latest drought gives the state another opportunity to put in place long-term solutions to responsibly manage its water resources.

"That means to keep the eye on the ball and get implemented the necessary conservation, the necessary construction of facilities, of conveyance, of storage, and repair of the Delta levees."

McPeak says these goals are interconnected and must all be done to be effective.

Last month, Governor Jerry Brown officially declared the end of California's three-year drought, after the Department of Water Resources reported the state's mountain snowpack to be 165-percent of average for the season.
