BOISE, Idaho - Yard decor with a message. That's the story behind the thousands of silver and blue pinwheels on display in Idaho for April's Child Abuse Prevention Month. Roger Sherman, executive director of Prevent Child Abuse Idaho at the Idaho Children's Trust Fund, says more than 11,000 pinwheels have been distributed locally, and more than one million nationwide.

"I think that people are getting more and more that the pinwheel is the national symbol of child abuse prevention. We've seen pinwheel gardens all over the state."

While there is strong awareness that child abuse is a serious issue, Sherman says the next step is helping people talk about prevention of it.

Sherman says everyone has a role to play in prevention.

"It's not just some agencies doing it, it's about what can we do to help a neighbor, what can we do to help a friend, what can we do to be a support in our churches, at our schools, and our child care centers."

A virtual Tel-E-Thon is taking place on Facebook Causes today featuring hour-by-hour interviews from experts in the field, including Sherman, as well as a drive for monetary pledges. (The interviews can be accessed through the Society Against Child Abuse on Facebook)

The Causes page is at www.causes.com The discussions will be posted each hour for 30 hours, starting at 11 a.m. MDT.
