Lawmakers Keep Focus on $1.2 Billion Tax Proposal

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Nevada lawmakers are expected to remain focused this week, after working over the weekend, on a $1.2 billion tax proposal that supporters say will save local school kids from drastic cuts in the classroom. The measure would help offset $714 million in K-12 funding cuts proposed by Governor Brian Sandoval, and has the support of gaming, the mining industry and educators, among others.

Nevada State Education Association president Lynn Warne says the proposal does more than just dig the state out of its current financial crisis.

"It definitely broadens the base here in Nevada; we've relied heavily in this state on gaming and sales tax revenues, and we've needed to broaden that base so that we can fund a quality education system for our youngsters."

The Nevada State Education Association started a statewide advertising blitz today because, Warne says, lawmakers need to be reminded of what's at stake as they make key decisions in the coming weeks.

"So the message is, 'Why aren't you more concerned about the future of Nevada, the future of our kids' education?' Stop playing politics; let's just get business to pay just a small amount more so that we can restore the budget. "

Warne says there would still be cuts to education, even if the tax plan makes it through in its current form, but she says they will not be as drastic as those currently proposed.

The Chamber of Commerce has yet to take a stand on the plan, which features a tax on gross business revenues. And in recognition of the growth of the service sector, it includes a 1 percent tax on a variety of services ranging from haircuts to legal work.

Sandoval opposes taxes in general and he and other Republicans doubt a tax plan can be crafted with less than a month to go in the legislative session.

The tax proposal would need enough support to override a likely veto by the governor.
