Oregon Wilderness Proposals Make the D.C. Docket

PORTLAND, Ore. - Two examples of the diversity of the Oregon landscape are up for consideration as wilderness in Congress. The Senate Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests has held hearings this week on proposals for the Oregon Coast Range "Devil's Staircase" and Central Oregon's "Cathedral Rock and Horse Heaven" wilderness acts.

Josh Laughlin, Cascadia Wildlands campaign director, says the Devil's Staircase bill would protect nearly 30,000 acres along Wassen Creek, making it the largest intact wilderness piece in the range.

"Truly a slice of history that was never logged off during the heyday of clear-cutting. It represents classic temperate old-growth rainforest. A myriad of threatened and endangered species call the area home."

Aaron Killgore, John Day coordinator for the Oregon Natural Desert Association, says the Cathedral Rock and Horse Heaven proposal encompasses about 16,000 acres and is a popular recreation zone, as well as home to elk and endangered fish.

"Columnar basalt cliffs that drop into the John Day River. Dramatic overlooks over the entire landscape. Some of the best backcountry rafting and hiking opportunities that exist in Oregon's high desert."

Both bills are sponsored by Oregon Democrats Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley. Wilderness proposals in Washington and New Mexico also are being considered.

Concerns about wilderness designation traditionally come from some off-road vehicle enthusiasts and logging and mining industries, since those activities are limited when wilderness is designated. The Pew Campaign for America's Wilderness points out, however, that the bills are based on collaborations that address many concerns.
