LAS CRUCES, N.M. – En caso de ser aprobada, la Organ Mountains-Doña Ana County Conservation and Protection Act (Ley de Conservación y Protección de las Montañas Organ del Condado Doña Ana), reintroducida recientemente al Congreso, daría origen a unos 241 mil acres de tierra silvestre y 99,150 más como área de conservación nacional.

Doña Ana alberga algunos de los paisajes más impactantes del suroeste del país tanto en las cimas como al pie de las Montañas Organ y en el Cañón Broad. Esta área federal, que durante mucho tiempo ha sido terreno propicio para el estudio de la vida silvestre, pudiera recibir este año protección completa bajo la citada Organ Mountains-Doña Ana County Conservation and Protection Act (Ley de Conservación y Protección de las Montañas Organ del Condado Doña Ana). El apoyo a la nueva designación como área silvestre protegida llega de todas partes, incluso de cazadores, pescadores y jinetes, como explica Don Patterson, vicepresidente del Lower Rio Grande Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of America (Capítulo del Bajo Río Grande, de Jinetes a Campo Traviesa de los Estados Unidos).

"Nuestro grupo monta mucho a caballo en esa área, y es un lugar magnífico para montar. No se ve ni un edificio, allá estás completamente solo. Es algo único."

Renee Frank, presidenta de Las Cruces Green Chamber of Commerce (Cámara Verde de Comercio de Las Cruces), dice que esta área silvestre ya puso a su comunidad en el mapa como destino turístico, lugar de retiro, y la actividad económica derivada de estos giros.

"Una de las cosas que han atraído a gente para venir a nuestra área, y querer quedarse en nuestra área, son las tierras y lugares tan maravillosos, abiertos y puros."

Una objeción frecuente a la designación es que podría convertirse en puerta de entrada para la inmigración ilegal, según dicen algunos. Pero el Comisionado Alan Bersin, de U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Protección aduanal y Fronteriza de los Estados Unidos) afirma que de hecho hará más segura la frontera.
