CHARLESTON, W.Va. - West Virginia construction workers are upset that a $10 million project being built at Kinetic Park in Huntington employs labor that is almost entirely "imported" from elsewhere. Amazon.com is building a new call center and office at the publicly-supported business park.

Mark Johnson, assistant to the business manager of the Tri-State Building Trades Council, says the out-of-state contractors are bringing in workers, despite many qualified employees in town waiting for jobs.

"There's more than ample enough local help to do this project. And they're a good citizen of Huntington, West Virginia; you'd think they'd reach out to the local construction workers to employ people."

Johnson says there are subcontractors from Georgia and from Louisville, Kentucky, among other places. He says one of the smaller subcontracts went to a local company, but the rest of the work seems to be going to people from out of the area.

"Out-of-town contractors, and most of the workers are from out of state, what we've observed. At least, the license plates reflect that."

The Cincinnati general contractor, Flanigan Real Estate Resources Incorporated, did not return a call requesting comment.

The Building Trades Council is staging an informational protest at the site.
