Koch Brother CO Summit Sparks Protests

AVON, Colo. - The billionaire brothers, David and Charles Koch, are hosting their second invitation-only gathering of conservative activists this year. This week's meeting is just outside of Vail, and some groups are using the gathering to criticize the influence the brothers have in the American elections process.

Jenny Flanagan, executive director of Colorado Common Cause, says about 50 protesters gathered at Avon's Nottingham Lake Park Sunday. She says the protest was not about partisan issues, but rather about how the Koch brothers use their money secretly to fund attacks on specific candidates and issues - usually those that advance the interests of the middle class, protect the environment or try to protect social services like Medicaid and Social Security.

"From our perspective, these public policy issues should be decided on the merit and the best interest of the American public, not based on the interests of these billionaire brothers."

Koch Industries did not respond to a request for a comment on the protest. However, after a similar Koch-sponsored gathering in January, a representative told the Los Angeles Times that the private events bring together "America's greatest philanthropists and job creators...who share a common belief that the current level of government spending in our nation is simply unsustainable."

Flanagan says representatives from the Koch meeting came to the park to observe Sunday's protest.

The Koch brothers raised $88 million at their January summit to create advertisements often critical of non-conservative candidates, issued through organizations like Americans for Prosperity or FreedomWorks, Flanagan says.

"It's so important for Americans to understand that there is big money behind the negative campaign ads that determine the outcomes of our elections."

This week's meeting only became public after Virginia Gov. Bob McDonald told a Richmond newspaper he would be attending the event.
