New Report Shows Promise for Rural WI Young People

MADISON, Wis. - A third of Wisconsinites live in rural areas, where it's often difficult to get affordable health insurance on the job. That means a lot of young Wisconsinites have to leave their home community to pursue a career.

However, a new report predicts that the Affordable Care Act will help revive rural areas by overcoming this obstacle, allowing them to get the insurance they need. It was written by Alyssa Charney, with the Center for Rural Affairs, Lyons, Neb.

"These different provisions of the Affordable Care Act will also provide the same young adults in rural communities - whether they're young farmers or entrepreneurs or health care providers - with really unique opportunities to return to and contribute to their own communities."

Charney says it's a myth that young people don't want to live in rural areas. She says many are forced to move because they can't find affordable health insurance.

"Limitations on how and where to find health insurance shouldn't determine where young people can live, the work they want to pursue, and the passions that they want to follow. But right now, that is what's happening, and it's especially important in rural communities."

Other parts of the Affordable Care Act will help bring health care providers back to rural areas, Charney notes, with incentives like scholarships and loans for those who agree to work in under-served areas.

As more provisions of the Act are rolled out, Charney is convinced it will be a big boost for rural communities.

"Young adults can stay on their parents' insurance, or they'll soon be able to purchase insurance through the marketplace, and there are also a lot of provisions that will provide incentives for employers to provide health insurance."

Charney says the Affordable Care Act should benefit rural America by supporting the younger generation, which means supporting small communities for generations to come. The report is available on the Center for Rural Affairs website, www.cfra.org.
