Small Businesses Helping Small Towns Grow

HURON, S.D. - Small businesses are the backbone of rural areas and small towns. However, getting help to succeed can be difficult. That's why the first South Dakota Marketplace Conference is being held in Huron later this month.

Conference organizer Joy Marshall with the Center for Rural Affairs says the event will help small businesses find the assistance they need.

"Our goal is to match people up with small business assistance, service providers and others they should be working with but may not be - whether they are at the city, state, government or federal level or whether they be other small business owners they need to be doing business-to-business with."

The conference is set for July 26 and 27 at the Crossroads Hotel and Event Center, Huron, with more than 30 educational sessions for business owners or those interested in a small business. The support that will continue after the conference for attendees could translate into an economic benefit for their towns, Marshall says.

"The end result is that we create stronger, more vibrant businesses, and they are going to create more wealth for themselves and more economic development within their rural communities."

While this is the first year for the Marketplace Conference in South Dakota, Marshall says they have had good success with similar events in Nebraska, Colorado and Kansas over the past few years.
