East KY Women, Filmmakers Educate about Reproductive Health

WHITESBURG, Ky. - Knowledge is power, say organizers of the East Kentucky Reproductive Health Project. They're going viral with that message in arming women in eastern Kentucky with resources to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. Organizers such as Kelli Haywood want the online tool to serve as a comprehensive clearing-house of health and provider information for the under-served population.

Haywood says the region's young women are producing and distributing media that explore their reproductive health experiences, concerns and needs.

"What we would like to see is that women have a safe place to tell their stories just how they experienced it. And, so that people can go there, hear those stories and then in turn make informed decisions."

The East Kentucky Reproductive Health Project website has information about pregnancy, birthing options, sexual and domestic violence and regional health services.

The arts and media center Appalshop in Whitesburg is helping to head up the project. Filmmaker Mimi Pickering says the group isn't pushing a particular policy or an agenda, but takes a reproductive justice approach in understanding women's health.

"Our relationships, our environment, our food, our jobs; all of these things affect our reproductive health and our general well-being."

Pickering says many women in the region hunger for health information and often don't know where to turn.

"People have a sense that we're kind of all barefoot and pregnant and ignorant, and that's just not the case. And, we see that with the young women we're working with. They very much want to determine their future, and they're kind of crying out for counseling and help."

Pickering and Haywood are planning for the project to extend beyond the virtual to the personal, as the group hopes to take its outreach efforts to in-home gatherings and college campuses this fall.
