AMES, Iowa - AARP will hold listening "posts" through the 2012 election to gather opinions about retirement and pocketbook issues for voters in the 50-plus set.

The Voter Education Campaign starts Saturday at the Ames Straw Poll on the Iowa State University campus, where people have a chance to share their views through interactive technology. The event is the first chance to determine which candidates are on top, says Peter Jefferies, AARP national campaign field manager, and also the first opportunity to find out what voters think the next president should do to address issues of those citizens age 50 and older.

"We are going to allow to people to vote their own individual opinions and ideas, which in turn we will use to contact the candidates and campaigns going forward - as well as other elected officials - on what we hear in Ames."

Jefferies suspects that the concerns and priorities of voters at the Straw Poll will revolve around the economy.

"We expect that people are going to voice their concerns about jobs, the economy, the debt, the deficit - the budget debate going on in Washington. But there are a myriad of other issues there that will be put before voters, such as the future of their own retirement security."

In addition to activities during the Straw Poll on Saturday, AARP is the sole sponsor of the post-debate Campaign Spin Rooms for the Iowa Republican Party scheduled for today in Ames. AARP plans events at both Democrat and Republican events throughout the campaign season.

The AARP tent will be located adjacent to Scheman Hall and Hilton Coliseum.
