MI Gets First Glimpse of President Obama's Jobs Plan

DETROIT - President Obama spent Labor Day in Michigan, attending Detroit's annual holiday parade and offering workers a preview of the jobs plan he plans to lay out in a speech to Congress later this week.

The crowd was hot with excitement on the chilly Monday afternoon as Obama addressed thousands of workers. In the home of the labor movement, and a state where unemployment has been on the rise for the past three months, Obama pledged his continued support for the working class and organized labor, and promised he has a plan to put Michigan and the rest of the country back to work.

At this point, talk is not enough, says Zack Pohl, communications director for We Are The People Michigan - a coalition of seniors, students, and workers.

"We really want to see some action on jobs now. Not sort of this pie-in-the-sky, long-term, kick the can down the road sort of thing we've seen all too often out of Washington. We really need to put people back to work right away."

In Detroit, he promised to support collective bargaining and fight for middle-class tax cuts, and challenged Congress to get on board. It's a sentiment Pohl echoed, saying he hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to make job creation a priority.

"The bottom line is, we need our elected officials to stop these power struggles and start working together to put people back to work and get our economy moving again."

This was Obama's second Labor Day visit to the Motor City; the first came during his campaign for the presidency in 2008. He is scheduled to unveil his jobs plan in a prime-time address to Congress on Thursday.
