MINNEAPOLIS - More than 700 young people from around the nation are in Minnesota today through Sunday for the second annual Next Up Young Workers Summit, part of the AFL-CIO's efforts to reach out to working people under age 35.

Jessica Hayssen, the AFL-CIO's Minnesota field director, says the goal is educate, empower and mobilize.

"They walk from this having better knowledge on using social media to fight for workers' rights, how to engage people in their workplace to have a larger voice on the job; and then they'll be able to have an opportunity to have networked with over 700 young people. And where there's networking, that's almost just as powerful as a union contract."

Today's opening of the summit includes a community service project and an address by U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis.

Hayssen says this summit comes when it's needed most.

"This generation of young workers has been hit the hardest by the Great Recession and the current jobs crisis. Unemployment for young people is almost double the national rate. Student loan debt increases with every graduating class, and starting salaries for college graduates are falling."

Still, Hayssen says there is hope.

"Young people are not waiting to be asked to lead. They're stepping up in new and dynamic ways across the country to organize themselves at the workplace."

One example, Hayssen says, is the workers at six East Coast H&M stores who recently organized a union.

Information on the summit is online at aflcio.org, a web page which automatically plays audio and video.
