DENVER - Colorado's nonprofits are in the business of helping the Centennial State's neediest residents - but sometimes the nonprofits are the ones who need help. To that end, there's a statewide program that makes it possible for nonprofits to save money through energy efficiency.

An example: Denver's Metro CareRing had a host of energy problems. Operations director Minerva Padron says their dreary lighting was just the tip of the iceberg.

"In the summer we would have the AC on, but we would still be hot. In the winter, although the heat was on, we were still cold. So, we always had to tell staff and volunteers to dress in layers."

Enter the Nonprofit Energy Assistance Program (NEEP), which is coordinated by Energy Outreach Colorado. NEEP offers assistance to nonprofits to increase energy efficiency. It did an energy audit of Metro CareRing and ended up replacing old boilers and air conditioners. They also improved the ductwork, added better thermostats, and upgraded the lighting to energy-efficient fluorescents. Padron says things are now much more comfortable.

Since 2006, NEEP has improved more than 120 facilities and plans to fund at least 30 more projects in the upcoming year.

Dace West is with the Denver Office of Strategic Partnership, one of the funders of the NEEP program. She says it began at a time when many nonprofits were already struggling to make ends meet.

"There's all kinds of situations where nonprofits and the people they serve are just making do with facilities. This program's really been able to come in and have a tremendous impact."

Padron says that was the case at Metro CareRing.

"Temperature control really affects the comfort level of people. We would, in the summer, tell our clients to keep hydrated, make sure they knew where the water fountain was. It was just not a good situation."

She adds they wouldn't have been able to make the improvements without NEEP's help.

The NEEP program is currently accepting applications for its next round of awards.

Applications for NEEP grants will be accepted through November 1 at www.energyoutreach.org
