LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Nevadans wondering about their rights in a foreclosure case - or even in a messy divorce - can get free and expert legal advice tonight in Reno. This is the 25th year The People's Law School will be in session. Chief Justice Nancy Saitta of the Nevada Supreme Court says the program prides itself on changing with the times and covering issues that are important at the moment.

Right now, for many Nevadans, that means teaching homeowners their rights in a down economy.

"With foreclosure mediation, loan modification and the potential for bankruptcy, it's important for our citizens to know their rights - and frankly, to be able to avoid any scams."

The Chief Justice will present the opening remarks at tonight's session, which will be held at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR). She succeeded Judge Michael Douglas to become Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court last month. The People's Law School is sponsored by the Nevada Foundation for Consumer Education, and the Nevada Justice Association.

Justice Saitta says the series of three Thursday night programs at UNR offers a wealth of basic legal advice to help people protect themselves in a variety of legal situations.

"Consumer education in its broadest sense is only helpful if you understand the legal rights that you have."

She says most Nevadans only come into contact with the legal system if they are injured or get into trouble. The People's Law School offers a way to learn about their rights before they get into a jam.

"It's an opportunity to really know what our system is, how it works - and in the end, how fortunate we are in this country to have a system that works as well as our legal system does."

Pre-registration is required through the Nevada Justice Association. For those who cannot attend in person, many sessions will be broadcast later on public access TV.

To register, call 775-885-7174. People's Law School sessions are Oct. 6, 13 and 20, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the William Raggio Bldg., Room 2003, University of Nevada Reno, Main Campus.
