KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Reading proficiently by 4th grade is an important milestone for all students, and is a gauge for future success in school and life. But it's a struggle for almost 70 percent of students in Missouri, according to Experience Corps. To help kids strengthen their reading skills, AARP has teamed up with the group.

Craig Eichelman, state director of AARP Missouri, says both organizations tap into the older population to coach younger generations, in this case, directly in classrooms.

"When you're in that multi-generational setting, something dynamic happens there. The kids really benefit, and the volunteer, who is working very hard, is getting something equally as important."

Eichelman says AARP members will assist the 2,000 Experience Corps volunteers who serve 20,000 students, K through 3rd grade, in disadvantaged schools across the country. He adds it's estimated that through the efforts of both organizations, they're on track to reach 100,000 students in five years - and they're recruiting volunteers in Missouri.

Eichelman says it's more than just volunteering. He says AARP volunteers fill a void in the lives of some children.

"Kids who are at risk of not reading at a proficient grade level, can get that attention from a mentor, someone older, that they may not have elsewhere in their life."

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, students who are not reading at grade level by 3rd grade are four times more likely than proficient readers to miss out on a high school diploma.
