MINNEAPOLIS - Hundreds of folks in Minnesota will lace up their sneakers Saturday, Oct. 15, to help raise awareness and funds as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The American Cancer Society's Michelle Shufelt says the charitable walking events are called "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" — which also describes what they've been doing.

"We have, I believe, it's a 98 percent, five-year survival rate. And what that means is, after you are diagnosed, up to five years with your clean bill of health, you have a 98 percent chance that it will not re-occur and you will be perfectly fine and healthy for the rest of your life."

However, despite advances in treating breast cancer, Shufelt says it is still much too common.

"This year, approximately 3,300 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the state of Minnesota, and 630 women in Minnesota will die from breast cancer. These are numbers we cannot continue to have. They're numbers we need to change."

One key to changing those numbers is early detection, and Shufelt says the best way to do that is by scheduling regular mammograms.

"Though they're not perfect, they're the best technology that we have right now to detect breast cancer. So, we encourage women ages 40 and older to make sure that they're getting their mammogram and talking to their doctor about that."

On Saturday, walks will be held in Minneapolis, Rochester and Winona. Tonight, on the eve of those events, the I-35-W bridge in Minneapolis will be lit with pink lights, to honor those who have lost their lives to the disease.

St. Cloud will host its "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk next weekend. Similar events have already taken place in Moorhead and Duluth. For event information, see www.cancer.org/stridesonline.
