Prevención de Cáncer de Seno y Mujeres de Indiana: Aún hay mucho que aprender

INDIANAPOLIS – Cada Octubre por toda Indiana cuelgan listones color de rosa para honrar el mes de concientización de cáncer de seno. Aunque a la mayoría de las mujeres saben que se les recomienda hacerse mamografías para detección de cualquier anormalidad, la mayoría no lo hacen.

Martha Trout, directora de iniciativas de salud para la American Cancer Society (Sociedad Americana del Cáncer) de la división Great Lakes dice que aunque el cáncer de seno es curable si es detectado en las primeras etapas, aún es la segunda causa de muertes de cáncer entre las mujeres, después del cáncer de pulmón que es la causa número uno.

"Varias mujeres simplemente no quieren hacerse la mamografía. Será por miedo de que encuentren una anormalidad, o por haber escuchado historias sobre el procedimiento de la mamografía y no quieren pasar por esa experiencia."

Añade Trout que los médicos deben evaluar el historial genético además del historial familiar, pero los dos factores más grandes del cáncer de seno es ser mujer y envejecer.

"Cuando estás en la edad entre los 70 y 80 años, es cuando el riesgo sube a una mujer en cada ocho. Cuando somos más jóvenes el riesgo es mucho menor."

También comenta Trout que las mujeres pueden reducir su riesgo de este cáncer al comer bien, hacer ejercicio y mantener un peso saludable. Junto con una mamografía, la ACS recomienda que todas las mujeres se hagan un autoexamen regularmente.

Las guías de la ACS recomiendan que las mujeres se hagan la mamografía a los 40 años, sin embargo, aquellas en grupos de alto riesgo, deben consultar a su médico sobre hacerla más temprano.
