Citizen Watchdogs Sound Off on Utility Issues in NV

LAS VEGAS - Pending rate hikes and mandatory "smart meters" are the biggest concerns of more than 18,000 local seniors who participated in an AARP Nevada telephone town hall on local utility issues Monday.

Barry Gold, AARP Nevada's director of government relations, says most of the callers expressed concerns about rates and privacy issues.

"They were very concerned about 'smart meters' being installed in their house, and they were also concerned about the rate increases proposed by Nevada Energy, down in the south."

AARP polled those who took part in the town hall, Gold says, and found a resounding 88 percent believe that decision makers don't listen to consumers on rate issues.

NV Energy says it needs the 11 percent rate hike to expand a local power plant and to increase investor returns. Gold says local seniors aren't buying that.

"They're asking for $240 million. That's almost a quarter of a billion dollars, and almost half of that is going towards profits. Why should NV Energy stockholders be getting such high profits when everyone else is struggling to get by?"

While smart meters can help the environment and save energy for working families, Gold says, local seniors may not see savings and are concerned about privacy.

"People are worried about the privacy aspect, and the idea that they're being forced to participate in something - because if you are a senior that doesn't go out, if you are home in the daytime, it could actually end up costing you more."

Gold says he hopes the Public Utilities Commission will decide that Nevadans - and particularly seniors - can opt out of having smart meters installed at their homes.
