LAS VEGAS, Nev. - On websites, billboards and various places around Nevada, "Classroom Superheroes" are being recognized today as part of National Education Week. Clark County Education Association President Ruben Murillo says 70 teachers and support workers in the Las Vegas area have been nominated by fellow educators for doing things like staying after class on their own time to help a student.

"Classroom Superheroes looks to recognize teachers in the classroom who are doing an outstanding job, who are doing things beyond the norm - who are making an impact on the lives of children."

Profiles of Nevada educators who go the extra mile are available at www.ClassroomSuperheroes.com. Parents, students and community members are being encouraged to leave their own comments on the website and via Facebook.

With so much blame falling on the teaching profession in 2011, Murillo says that's why this year they want to shine a spotlight on the kind of outstanding teaching that takes place every day, all across the Silver State.

"There's so much negativity geared toward education and teachers that we want to make sure people know that teaching is a positive profession, it is a wonderful profession, and there are teachers who are doing an excellent job. This is just another way to recognize them."

Murillo says teachers tend to be humble by nature, so the Superhero idea may take a little getting used to, but he expects the number of Nevada Classroom Superheroes to grow as National Education Week goes on.
