DETROIT - Tuesday marks the ninth annual Michigan Adoption Day. It is a chance to recognize those who have created new families by opening their hearts and homes, and to draw attention to the many more children still in need.

Nicole Vaughn, Detroit, started out as a foster parent. Through the support of her family and Lutheran Adoption Service, her fifth adoption was recently finalized. She is now a single mom to four boys and one girl, who otherwise would have remained in the foster care system.

Vaughn says the experience has enriched her life in ways she never knew possible.

"I'm really more driven because when my kids are happy, I'm happy; when their needs are met, I'm ecstatic about that because I know for a fact that I have a purpose."

State officials say there are at least 3,000 kids in the foster care system with the goal of adoption.

Lutheran Adoption Service, Michigan's largest full-service private adoption service, is one of the organizations that helps families navigate the requirements and procedures to foster and adopt children in need.

Vaughn says her experience proves it all begins with an open mind and an open heart.

"Even if they just want to nuzzle up because it's thundering outside, and want to come in my bed, kids need that, just to know there's somebody that's going to be there and respond to their needs."

About 30 counties statewide are expected to hold Adoption Day events, finalize adoptions, or hold adoption information fairs this week.

More information on adopting a child is available at www.lssm.org.
