KERNERSVILLE, N.C. - Teachers give the gift of learning year 'round, and as a result they are often remembered during the holidays with gifts and notes from students. But sometimes the present goes far beyond a sweet-smelling candle or box of chocolates.

Several years ago, Kernersville Elementary teacher Sheila Bridges received a mysterious package in a white box, similar to what you'd get from a fudge shop. Inside, she found a dead bird.

"I thought it was chocolate. The robin had flown into the window and we were studying animals, so that's why she thought it was going to be the greatest thing."

Other gifts teachers reported receiving went beyond a good chuckle. Teachers tell of receiving a disadvantaged student's last piece of candy or a favorite toy. One teacher receives a $500 donation annually for class materials from a donor who understands educators often fund their own classroom supplies.

Randolph County elementary school teacher Christopher Tuft has a vivid remembrance of the gift he received the year he had a bunny in the classroom. A well-intentioned student gave him a watch with a Playboy bunny logo.

"I opened it, and of course you know I recognized it right away for what it was, and he had no idea. He was just thrilled that he had found something with a bunny on it to give me."

Any gift from a student is special, Tuft says, particularly in this economic climate where education budgets are being cut and sometimes educators feel undervalued by the public.
