Cuomo Gets a “B-Plus” From Immigrants Rights Activist

ALBANY, N.Y. - Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office on Wednesday announced plans to create an Office of New Americans to assist legal permanent residents who come to the state.

Cuomo left that item - along with two other related issues - out of his State of the State Address on Wednesday, possibly for lack of time. His office wouldn't say. Even so, immigrant-rights advocate Lucia Gomez-Jimenez still gave his speech a "B-plus."

"I won't say I've given him an 'A' because I think that he shies away on being really explicit about some of the great things that he does for our communities - or some of the things he's trying to do."

In reviewing his accomplishments of the past year, she says, Cuomo left out his executive order providing language services - translators and translations - at all levels of state services, something she holds in high regard.

Cuomo did make a broad statement near the end of his speech, celebrating the role of immigrants in the Empire State.

"While other states build walls to keep people out, we open our arms and we invite people in. We're not afraid of diversity. We celebrate diversity. We are a state of immigrants."

Gomez-Jimenez says she thinks Cuomo simply was tailoring his remarks to accommodate an audience from upstate, on hand to hear him announce a major development program for western New York.

"There are certain things that he feels have broad appeal, so I just think that he was appealing to a certain kind of crowd, and the Office of New Americans probably was not that crowd."

The office would provide a variety of services, such as access to adult education and job training, and helping highly skilled and trained legal immigrants obtain licenses and credentials for work.
