Free Tax-Time Help for Thousands of Ohioans

COLUMBUS, Ohio - It's almost tax season, and free help is available that should make tax time less "taxing" for thousands in Ohio.

Eligible residents can receive assistance with filling out federal and state income-tax returns through the Ohio Benefit Bank. At a time when many are struggling, says Maryjo Mace-Woodburn, director of work-support initiatives at the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks, the Benefit Bank can help working individuals and families maximize the refund amounts they'll receive.

"Oftentimes, they're using that for home repairs and car repairs, very costly things that can keep them from working, or from stable housing, etc. So it's really important that Ohioans have access to free tax filing, so they can get every penny of their tax return back."

Each year, more than $2 billion in tax credits and other types of support go unclaimed by Ohioans, even though they are eligible. One of these, Mace-Woodburn says, is the Earned Income Tax Credit, a special tax refund for low-wage workers.

"One of every four taxpayers is eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit and fails to claim it. That can be thousands of dollars that a household is eligible for and leaves on the table when they don't claim those dollars."

Through the Ohio Benefit Bank, Mace-Woodburn says, more than 273,000 Ohioans have gained access to potential tax credits and work supports valued at more than $577 million.

Ohio Benefit Bank counselors are stationed at more than 1,100 sites across the state as well as through a free online program at ohiobenefits.org. The tax-preparation service begins Jan. 17 for Ohioans with annual household incomes of $60,000 or less.

In addition to tax preparation assistance, Mace-Woodburn says, the Benefit Bank can identify other work-related support for which people may qualify, including food and medical assistance and child-care subsidies.
