SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The tax filing season is upon us, and for many people it's an anxious and confusing time. However, help is available. Cathy McLeer with AARP-South Dakota says her organization offers assistance through the AARP Tax-Aide program.

"We have more than 150 AARP Foundation Tax Aide volunteers across the state of South Dakota in more than 10 communities who are ready to help low-income and moderate-income taxpayers of all ages, but certainly giving special attention to those 60 and older. We help them prepare their tax returns at no cost at all."

She says the program has helped a lot of taxpayers.

"Last year, our more than 150 volunteers helped prepare more than 10,000 tax returns for individuals right here in South Dakota, and at no cost."

McLeer says you don't have to be an AARP member or a senior citizen to use the program.

"This is for everyone and not just for senior citizens. We help people of all ages prepare their tax returns. They give a little bit special attention to those 60 and older, but you do not have to be 60 or an AARP member to take advantage of the service."

In 2010, Tax-Aide volunteers across the country helped tax filers get more than $232 million in earned income tax credits, McLeer says.

Information about the location of Tax-Aide volunteer sites is available online at www.aarp.org/taxaide.
