A World Record Attempt That Will Help Minnesota's Hungry

MINNETONKA, Minn. – The Intercongregation Communities Association (ICA) Food Shelf in Minnetonka is taking aim at breaking a world record to help Minnesota's hungry. On Saturday, March 24, says project assistant Winona Kraft, they'll spend 24 consecutive hours collecting food donations at Cub Foods, located at Highways 7 and 101.

"From 10 to 5, we're having a mini-donut stand, kettle corn, and face-paint, and grilling. We're just trying to create an atmosphere for people to come and want to hang out there – and then hopefully, they'll want to contribute for us."

The current world record for most food collected in a 24-hour period is 559,000 pounds. The goal for ICA Food Shelf's Saturday event: a whopping 600,000 pounds.

The world-record attempt is part of the March Campaign from Minnesota Foodshare, a month-long effort that is drawing to a close. Director Sara Nelson-Pallmeyer says the goal is to raise enough food and money to stock 300 food shelves across the state with half of their annual needs – and they hope to get there.

"I am always hopeful! I am conservative in my hopefulness, but it looks really positive. There are a lot of efforts going on in the next week and a half here – so, I think so."

While the economy has been slowly improving and more people are finding work, adds Pallmeyer, the need at food shelves continues to rise.

"As people come to the food shelf, maybe they got a job, but the new job may not pay what the old one did, or they're getting caught up on previous bills and there still isn't money for food, or food in the cabinets. And so, the food shelves are needed just as much as, if not more than, ever."
