Montana Insurance Commissioner Marks ACA Anniversary

HELENA, Mont. – There are two candles on the cake today (Friday) as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marks its anniversary, and new data shows that literally thousands of Montanans of all ages have benefited from the law, even though it has yet to be fully implemented and faces scrutiny from the U.S. Supreme Court starting next week.

Montana Insurance Commissioner Monica Lindeen is holding an event today, along with health professionals, to discuss the changes. They include allowing young people to stay on their parents' policies until age 26, and offering a way for those with illnesses to buy affordable health insurance coverage, says Lindeen.

"Hundreds of Montanans who couldn't afford insurance have got the coverage and the care they desperately need through the federal high-risk pool. To put it simply, the act has saved a lot of people's lives."

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) has released a new data sheet that shows more than 115,000 seniors with Medicare received free preventive services, and that 166,000 other Montanans with private insurance gained preventive service coverage without cost-sharing, as a result of the ACA.

Another benefit being touted today - the ACA has resulted in more support for Community Health Centers, which provide access, and jobs, in rural areas. That's seen as a long-term savings because earlier treatment and care can keep people out of emergency rooms. Commissioner Lindeen sees a similar long-term benefit in the high-risk insurance pool.

"The high-risk pool also saves money in the long run. The cost of caring for the uninsured comes back to everyone as higher prices for medical services."

Lindeen notes there is still work ahead to find ways to cut healthcare costs, and to educate Montanans about the law's provisions so that more people can gain the benefits.
