Vikings Stadium Bill Scores Another Committee Victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Legislation to build a new stadium in downtown Minneapolis for the National Football League's Minnesota Vikings continues to move forward at the state Capitol, with approval Tuesday in a second Senate committee.

The Minnesota AFL-CIO is among those pushing for passage, with its president, Shar Knutson, saying it - along with approval of a bonding bill - would prop up Minnesota's construction industry.

"While many other sectors have begun to improve, this sick sector has not. And so, we believe that stadium construction and a large infrastructure bill would put tens of thousands of Minnesota's construction workers back to work on the job, in every corner of the state."

The union also is supporting passage of Gov. Mark Dayton's proposal for a bonding bill for state public works projects, which Knutson calls another key to job creation.

"The Legislature talked about it when they first came into session, but we really haven't seen anything. And so, we know that the best way to get people back to work is through a large infrastructure bonding bill."

Dayton is seeking a $775 million bonding package, but proposals by Republicans in the House and Senate are much smaller and have hit some stumbling blocks.

Both the bonding bills and the stadium plan have their opponents, who say the state can't afford to be borrowing money or helping a billionaire NFL team owner. But Knutson says this is about the livelihood of many in Minnesota's middle class.

"If the Legislature adjourns and leaves nearly 40,000 family-sustaining jobs on the table, it'll be a great disservice to all Minnesotans who want and need that work, and that's why it's so important that they get this done."

The stadium bill is scheduled to be heard today in the Senate Finance Committee, in what could be its final stop before a full Senate vote. A vote on the House floor is pending, also possibly today.
