MI Company’s New Ideas for Wind Energy: “Thinking” Blades

May 14, 2012

EATON RAPIDS, Mich. - A wind turbine blade that's so smart, it lets engineers know when it needs maintenance. That's one example of new technology that Dowding Industries manufacturing in Eaton Rapids is ready to build... Except that customers are delaying their orders.

Company president Jeff Metts says it's because the federal wind production tax credit is set to expire at the end of this year, and Congress has yet to decide whether to renew it. Metts says the delay is being felt through many related industries.

"When you're going to improve technologies, they're going to overflow into all kinds of industries. Nothing stays within one industry. The thing that bothers me about this: We've been to Washington I don't know how many times, and nobody disagrees with it."

Metts says he thinks there's been a misunderstanding about how the tax credit works. He explains that it is not "free money."

"I have to make something and be profitable. So I have to create the jobs, I've got to create the industry, I've got to bring stuff to bear. I can't just say 'Give me money.'"

Bipartisan legislation has been introduced for a temporary extension.

Legislation to temporarily extend the PTC is S. 2201.
