BISMARCK, N.D. - Teens across America are said to be having a hard time finding work, although North Dakota is among the states where more opportunities are available. North Dakota Department of Labor Commissioner Tony Weiler says young workers generally start out in the service industry, working in retail or food.

"They get their first job in a grocery store or restaurant. Then, when summer comes around, we see a lot of municipalities hiring teens to do work with youth programs or with other kids."

Unemployment among 16- to 19-year-olds in North Dakota is just under 15 percent - among the lowest figures in the U.S. Nationally, however, fewer than three in 10 teenagers now hold jobs, putting employment for 16- to 19-year-olds in America at its lowest level since World War II.

Weiler says those who are age 14 or 15 and looking for work must fill out an employment and age certificate and file it with his office.

"And then we make sure it is a job that they can do. For example, they can't do anything hazardous; they can't work with any power-driven equipment. And there are also restrictions on the number of hours those young people can work."

More information from the North Dakota Department of Labor is available at www.nd.gov. Statistics analyzed by the Employment Policies Institute on teen employment and teen unemployment nationwide in 2012 are available at http://bit.ly/Nnvrkq.
