SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The leadership is changing for the state's leading children's advocacy group as it faces a big new fund-raising task.

Dr. Susan Randall is stepping down as executive director of South Dakota Voices for Children. She began as the group's single, part-time employee in 1999, and is retiring at the end of the month.

Jennifer Kline, who will step in to head the group, has her first goal already in sight. She takes the reins just as the group is racing to match a major fund-raising challenge that expires Saturday.

"The Fishback Community fund of Brookings has offered us a $10,000 challenge grant, and the match must come from new donors. So, it's really a great time - if anyone's been thinking about supporting our efforts to keep South Dakota's children healthy, educated and safe - now is definitely the time to do that."

Randall says the grant would help the organization expand some of its programs for teenagers.

"This is really key to the work we're doing to advancing teen driving safety. We're working on improved policies, graduated drivers licensing policies that will keep kids safe in auto travel. We continue to work with our Youth Council to advocate for seat-belt use."

Randall says the group's commitment to children also includes its work on early childhood education, and supporting the expansion of after-school programs across the state.

She says the group also is looking for volunteers to serve as children's policy advocates around the state to promote the importance of early learning and child-care safety.
