What Does the Future Hold for ND Under the Affordable Care Act?

June 29, 2012

BISMARCK, N. D. – Supporters of President Obama's health care reform law say the U.S. Supreme Court's Thursday decision to uphold it is good news.

Stacie Fredenberg, manager of advocacy at the Community HealthCare Association of the Dakotas, believes the ruling is especially vital for those who don't have insurance coverage – or those who do, but are struggling to pay their premiums.

"Community Health Centers have been a proven model of care, and upholding the Affordable Care Act will give us the opportunity to continue to expand access to care to those in need."

Fredenberg says once fully implemented, the Affordable Care Act will mean more health care choices.

"Having the ability to have access to care by having increased Medicaid coverage and insurance coverage definitely gives people more options."

Taking an opposite view is North Dakota Senator John Hoeven. He and many fellow Republicans call the ACA "a tax on the American people" that must be repealed and replaced with what they have described as step-by-step, market-based reforms.
