Missouri Families Count Down to Slim Down

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - There is no shortage of fresh fruits and veggies at this time of the year. That's why some nutritionists say that now is the best time to start eating healthy foods.

Shelly Summar, Weight Management Program coordinator at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics, helped to develop a countdown to help families slim down. She suggests that every day children get 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, 4 glasses of water, 3 servings of low-fat milk or yogurt, no more than 2 hours of TV time and 1 hour of physical activity.

Summar says when dishing up things like grapes or berries, what's called a "one cup" serving is really about the size of the eater's fist and therefore varies according to the size of the person.

"For example, for a 5-year-old child, the amount that would equal the size of his or her fist is - in general - about one serving."

An apple about the size of a fist is considered one serving, but Summar says a serving of greens would be different.

"For raw, leafy greens, two cups are counted as one serving."

In other words, servings of most fresh foods are one cup or the size of your fist, except salads. One serving of salad is two cups - or the size of two fists.

It's important to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors made in a variety of ways, she adds, and it's good to offer children a food item more than once. A child might turn down raw cauliflower but really like it mashed, like mashed potatoes, or she might prefer grilled or stir-fried broccoli over steamed, Summar explains.

"Just because you didn't like it one way doesn't mean you won't like it again or served in a different way."

Summar says it's a good idea to let children choose what they want to eat. However, instead of offering them a choice between an apple or potato chips, she suggests having them choose between two healthy options, such as an apple or fresh cherries. It's a good idea to offer them fruits and vegetables more than once, she says, because over time they may develop a taste for healthy food - especially when they see their parents enjoying it.

For people on low incomes, some farmers' markets accept food stamps and offer $2 worth of fresh food for every $1 in food stamps.
