Push for Green Energy in NC

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - With the merger of Duke and Progress Energy, much of North Carolina now is being served by the nation's largest utility. The new Duke Energy reportedly has a number of wind- and solar-energy projects in the United States, and environmental advocates are pushing the energy provider to continue to transition away from coal-fired power plants.

Asheville is home to a coal plant, previously owned by Progress Energy. Kelly Martin, spokeswoman for the Sierra Club, says Duke has an obligation to pursue cleaner energy.

"With that greater power comes a greater responsibility. They have an opportunity to move forward with solar and wind power."

Martin points to evidence that coal is making some North Carolinians sick and is polluting resources, such as the French Broad River. There are currently 67 coal-fired boilers in the state. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, North Carolina's energy consumption is among the highest in the nation. The state ranks among the top 10 states in wind-power capacity.

Martin says Asheville's coal-fired power plant is a great example of one that could be retired, with the city leading the way in clean-energy businesses.

"Instead of relying on technology of the past, we should be instead moving boldly toward a clean, homegrown energy future."

Martin also points to lower startup costs in wind and solar industries, making green energy a more affordable and practical possibility, compared to several years ago.
