Hoosier Help Needed to Prevent Child Neglect, Deaths

Monday, July 23, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS - Some Indiana parents face felony neglect charges for leaving their children in sweltering cars or unattended at pools - or when the children just wandered off alone. Just as people check in on their elderly neighbors in the extreme heat, says Sandy Runkle DeLorme, program director for Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, they also should offer to help overwhelmed parents...

"Families, they do appreciate the offer. And, at least they know - even if they say 'no' the first time - at least they know, 'Hey, this person reached out to me, so I know that they care, or I know that maybe I could go to them if I do need help.' "

She says anyone, anywhere in the state, can call 1-800-CHILDREN (1-800-244-5373) to find resources. In rural areas with fewer options, she says, faith-based communities and other organizations need to step up to make sure children are supervised and have things to do.

This time of year and in this economy, she says, it can be difficult for families to adequately monitor children...

"In the summertime, when there's no school going on, the family has to work and they don't have child care or they don't have appropriate child care, then children may just be left with anyone or maybe they're left unsupervised at home for long periods of time."

She says parents and caregivers need to seek help...

"Parents who may be stressed and sleep-deprived, they may actually - as bizarre as this sounds - they may actually forget they have a child in the back of a car and unfortunately, there can be heat related deaths, which there have been."

Neglect, whether intended or not, can have devastating short- and long-term consequences, she says. Parents may avoid reaching out for help because they'd feel stigmatized as a "bad parent" for doing so - but she says they must remember what's in the child's best interest.
